It's All About the Music!

It's All About the Music - and we would love to share our favourite new (and sometimes not so new) releases. We'll be sharing diverse artists and styles from the CMI listening room - and we highly recommend and encourage you to investigate other releases and contributions from these highly creative and talented musicians and artists.

Check back often as we will update our Music Section frequently!

Carry Fire - Robert Plant

As a renowned musician, Plant has access to amazing musical resources and experts, and Carry Fire reflects that. It breaks the mould of rock music, or even folk rock music, by using a diverse set of instruments, incorporating some electronic accents where appropriate and taking advantage of the sheer artistry in his vocal ability. Carry Fire is a perfect addition to Plant's catalogue — it's modern, expressive and musically brilliant, and like his origins in '60s rock, it won't get old. It's no wonder he consistently squashes Led Zeppelin reunions: He's powerful enough on his own.

Home Made Ice Cream - Tony Joe White

"Audiophiles, this is a must-have LP. The sound is completely natural with no studio artifacts. What stands out, though, are the timbral qualities of the instruments and White's great voice. Organ, piano and bass are there for harmonic effect, but the sounds of the drums and guitars are some of the best I've heard from my system. Originally recorded in 1973, this reissue LP jumped to the top of my short list for Audiophilia's Star Recordings of the Year, 2013." Anthony Kershaw, Audiophilia.com, May 2013

Year Zero - Nine Inch Nails

"This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere. That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more...it takes place about fifteen years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have the idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point - politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, Year Zero examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth."

Trent Reznor

This is Happening - LCD Soundsystem

James Murphy's third and final LCD Soundsystem release. "Dance Yrself Clean" sets out with three plus minutes of sleep induced low key drum beats coupled with an electronic drone / cowbell with overlying commentary on the state of friends and friendships - then !!!BAM!!! - at 3:08 a cutting synth and drum rhythm explodes out of nowhere. Abrupt and jarring like an effective wakeup call should be...alone worth the price of admission on this exceptional "punkfunk" electronic masterpiece.

Temptation - Holly Cole

Released in August, 1995 Temptation is a tribute to the songs and artistry of Tom Waits.  An exceptional, reference quality release oozing Holly's jazz blues vocal charm in an unhurried, relaxed and spontaneous delivery. This release adds guitar and drums to the instrumentation augmenting the Trio format of vocals, piano and bass. Temptation is CMI's favourite Holly Cole release, we bet it's Tom Waits' too!

Flash Flood of Color - Enter Shikari

For their third release, this UK post hardcore quartet have fused electronic, dubstep, industrial, rave, dance and metal into a fusion of socially conscious messages warning of the inherent dangers of consumerism and global warming with insightful perspectives on world politics.

Their message is clear - without imminent change our socio-economic system is destined to fail. SYSTEM MELTDOWN!

Revelator - Tedeschi Trucks Band

Having put their respective bands on hold to morph their part-time Soul Stew Revival into the Tedeschi Trucks Band, husband and wife team Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks released Revelator to critical acclaim which went on to capture the 2011 Grammy for Best Blues Album. Featuring an 11 piece band complete with horn section, TTB blends Memphis Soul, 70's Funk and R&B into an explosive live experience. Vinyl edition highly recommended.
